Missions and Benevolence

First Christian Church is active in the community of West Memphis.  We are known as a sharing and loving body of believers.

The church provides the land and water for a large garden cared for by the 8th Street Mission for Jesus Christ.  The Mission residents plant, maintain and harvest the garden.  The vegetables produced are used by the Mission to feed the individuals who reside at the Mission and the many and varied persons from the community who are feed at the mission.  Any remaining vegetables are sold, and the money goes to the 8th Street Mission.  We are very pleased to be able to help feed the hungry in this joint effort with the 8th Street Mission for Jesus Christ.  You can learn more about the 8th Street Mission by clicking here.

The church supports the 8th Street Mission for Jesus Christ monetarily throughout the year, with special donations being made during the holidays.  We assist the Mission in purchasing toys for children who otherwise would not receive gifts for Christmas.

For the past ten years, our church has been a supporter of Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, the state-run nursing home in West Memphis.  We provide prizes for the weekly bingo games held on Wednesdays.  Birthday gifts are purchased by the Arkansas Disciples Women of First Christian Church and the gifts are presented at a birthday party to all those individuals who have had birthdays during the month.  These birthday parties are held on the last Friday of each month.  Ladies from our church attend the weekly Wednesday afternoon bingo games and monthly birthday parties to help the staff assist the residents.  We purchase Christmas gifts for all of the residents as well as make a monthly donation to the nursing home.  Not only are the lives of the residents enriched by this mission effort, but the lives our members are enriched as well.

This ministry team makes sure that meals are provided for the sick and grieving members of the church.  Our Fifth Sunday Harvest provides nonperishable food items for home health patients.  The church collects the food on the fifth Sundays during the year and distributes it to home health patients who are in need.  We also support Hope House (a transition home for women who have recently been released from incarceration) and the Good Neighbor Center (a local food bank) with donations of food items at various times throughout the year.
