Chancel Choir

Picture
West Memphis FCC formed a chancel choir about twenty-five years ago, with approximately ten to twelve members.  Through the years, the choir has gone through several changes, including change of choir directors and various choir members, but continues to offer primarily traditional style music on Sunday mornings and special music throughout the year, such as its Christmas and Easter Cantatas.

The choir, which has no required "audition" to join, is open to all who wish to offer "joyful songs to our Lord", and with humor, call themselves "A Joyful Noise".  Practice is held every Sunday after the morning worship service, and occasionally there is an extra practice day (as needed) during the week during the Easter or Christmas season.  The choir also sings special music during the annual Hanging of the Greens (the first Sunday of Advent) and Maundy Thursday (during the holy week of Lent) services.  Taped music with occasional DVDs for visual accompaniment are primarily used, but accompaniment on the piano or organ is used as well.

The choir is presently enjoying sitting in chancel choir pews, with riser and rail/hymn holder lovingly handmade by a church member.  There are now twelve choir members, but that number has vacillated from ten to fifteen throughout the years.  Since, at present time, there is no youth choir, ages in the choir range from the youngest member at twelve years, to "senior citizen" age.

Every Sunday an anthem is sung by the choir, with a range of traditional and contemporary music being offered.    Several choir members, on occasion offer solos, vocal or instrumental, to add to the variety of music selections.

The annual "Sing and Sup" fundraiser, open to the entire community, provides entertainment from the choir and its individual members.  Along with lots of laughs, it brings monies for both local charities and support to help with choir expenses.

"A Joyful Noise" looks forward to weekly practices, viewing them as a form of worshipping with our Lord, and invites anyone who wishes to participate.
